If you are thinking about traveling solo for the first time ever but are a little nervous, these are my tips to ease you in. The goal is to have an amazing time, and if that means being alone and exploring the whole time, amazing! You can do what you want to do and when you want to do it, part of the beauty of solo travel. If you maybe want some company and to meet new people that is perfectly okay too! However you travel, as a solo traveler we want to have fun and feel safe.
Book Hostels That Have Activities
Hostels are known for being great for solo travelers. I have stayed in a bunch of different types of hostels, and they are not all great. My favourite type are ones that have activities because this makes it easier to meet people. For example, some will do a walking tour during the day, where it is easy to get talking to others. Then it will end and you grab some lunch with the people you just meet or end up going for a drink and go from there.
Group Tours
If chatting to people at a hostel is hard for you, I totally understand! I love group tours because you are forced to meet people. You end up so close to everyone you are travelling with because you have just shared this amazing experience together that neither of you will ever forget!
Do Your Research And Be Prepared
I know this is a ‘solo travelers’ post and not a ‘first time travelers’ post, but it is important when you solo traveling to do your research as you have no one else who may help you along the way. A big goal here is to make sure you feel safe and we can do that by knowing about the destination.
One thing that I find comes up in my job a lot, is getting from the airport to the hotel. If you have booked a group tour, a lot might be able to organise a transfer for you at an extra cost. Otherwise, a taxi is an easy and safe option. Always make sure you get into an official taxi! There are normally official taxi ranks at airport with people around to help you.
I make sure that before I leave the airpot I have everything I need, I have purchased a sim card for my phone so I can see directions to the hotel, I have cash so I can pay the taxi, make sure I have apps on my phone such as google translate and I am all ready to go!
Don’t miss out on incredible moments because you are waiting on others….
