Lately, I have been thinking about my “why”.
Why do I travel? Why am I saving and spending all my funds on this thing? Why is this something I value so much?
There are a few reasons why different people travel, and learning yours can help you plan the best trips for you. Everyone is different, but most people tent to fall into one of the following categories.
Types of travellers
Achievement – They do trips that may be more challenging and enjoy ticking bucket list items off their list. This could include things like hiking to Everest Base Camp or travelling to every country in the world.
Recreational – They are escaping their everyday life, relaxing and enjoying the break. This could be things like a beach holiday in Thailand, or a cooking class in Italy.
Educational – Learning about the history and culture of the places you go to. Doing a tour of the great pyramids or the world’s oldest archaeological sites Göbekli Tepe in Türkiye.
Interpersonal – Building relationships, meeting new people and group activities. This could be going to music festivals or just travelling in hostels and spending time in common areas to meet people.
When I think about my “why” I do not solely fit into one of the above, but a mix of all of them.
Learning about other cultures around the world enrich our lives. Developing connections with others is such a deep part of the human experience. It is about being in a new environment, experiencing something new, feeling the energy.
I believe it is important to establish your “why” for travel before you start planning. This will determine the type of travel you plan. For example, group travel, active travel, all inclusive etc. If you plan your travels catered towards your why, you are more likely to have the most amazing time you enjoy more.
What type of traveller are you?
