How To Stay Connected: Supporting Loved Ones from Anywhere

February 4, 2025

Being a traveler means constantly saying hello to new places—and goodbye to people you love. Whether you’re a digital nomad, an expat, or just someone who loves to take off on adventures, staying connected with your people back home (or wherever they may be) can feel tough. But distance doesn’t have to mean disconnection.

Here’s how to be there for your friends and family, no matter where in the world you are.

1. Make the Most of Time Zones

Time zones can be tricky, but they don’t have to be an excuse. Get familiar with the time difference and find a sweet spot that works for both of you. Maybe it’s a quick voice note while you have your morning coffee and they’re winding down for the night. Or a Sunday catch-up call at a set time every week.

Tip! – Use apps like World Time Buddy or set alarms on your phone to remember when your loved ones are awake.

2. Set Calendar Reminders to Check In

Life gets busy when you’re always on the move, and it’s easy to let weeks slip by without checking in. Set calendar reminders for key dates like birthdays, anniversaries, or just a monthly “message [friend’s name]” alert. Even a quick “Hey! How’s your week been?” can make someone feel special.

3. Send Thoughtful Messages (Even When You’re Busy)

You don’t always have time for a full chat, but a little message goes a long way. Instead of a plain text, try:
✔️ Voice notes – Let them hear your voice for a more personal touch.
✔️ Memes & inside jokes – A quick way to make someone laugh.
✔️ Photo updates – Share a cool moment from your travels so they feel included.

4. Plan Virtual Hangouts

We all got very familiar with video calls during lockdowns, but they’re still an amazing way to stay connected. Some fun ways to hang out online:
📅 Coffee catch-ups over Zoom – Treat it like a real coffee date.
📺 Netflix watch parties – Use Teleparty to stream a show together.
🍽️ Cook together – Pick a recipe and make the same meal while video calling. (Bonus if it is a local dish from your travels!)

5. Celebrate Their Wins in Meaningful Ways

Just because you’re far away doesn’t mean you can’t show up for the big (or small) moments in their life. Some thoughtful ways to celebrate:
🎉 Get flowers or treats delivered for birthdays, promotions, or just because.
📮 Send postcards from your travels with a personal message.
🍷 Transfer them money for a drink and tell them, “This one’s on me, cheers!”

6. Be There for the Lows Too

It’s easy to celebrate the wins, but being there during the tough times matters just as much. If a friend is struggling, check in more often. Even if you don’t know what to say, a simple “I’m here for you” can mean the world. You can also:
📞 Schedule a call just to listen.
💌 Send a care package with their favourite snacks.
💬 Remind them you’re thinking of them with an unexpected message.

7. Invite Them Into Your Journey

Just because they’re not physically with you doesn’t mean they can’t be part of your travels. Keep them in the loop by:
📸 Sharing travel photos and videos so they see what you’re up to.
🛍️ Find a gift they’d love and bring it back for them.
✈️ Planning a future trip together so there’s something to look forward to.

8. Make an Effort to See Them

At the end of the day, nothing beats in-person time. If you have the chance, plan visits home or meet up in a new destination. Even if it’s just once a year, those moments together will mean everything.

Being away doesn’t mean growing apart. With a little effort and intention, you can stay just as close to your friends and family—no matter where in the world you are. 💛
