The way we are told to make goals is by using SMART goals.
Our goals need to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time bound. I think it is a great theory, very practical, makes sense. I have always set goals this way. I don’t think I have ever achieved a single one.
So this year I am doing it differently. Maybe having specific goals is stopping me from achieving more than what I think I can. What if there is more coming my way that what I can plan for myself? The universe is a crazy place, why do my goals need to be so restricting?
This year I have created themes I want for my life. I have found by doing this I am actively changing my everyday habits. Which has helped me build the life I want by prioritising these things.
My themes for the year in 2023 are Health, Wealth, Connection, and Joy.
I want this year to be prioritising those four things everyday.
- I will be the healthiest version of myself, this means food to give me energy. Moving my body in ways that I actually enjoy, and getting medical check ups.
- I will focus on money, really making my budget work for me and not what I am told it should be. Only purchasing things that are bringing me joy, having bigger long term goals I am working towards.
- I will make deeper connections with people. I will make more of an effort to bring joy to those around me, be thoughtful and be vulnerable.
- I will do things that bring me joy, I will make joy in every situation. I don’t need to be joyful every single second. Life is about the highs and lows, but I will still make specific time for joy and fun in my life. All the above themes can also be about adding more joy in my life. I wanted to add it in as a focus because this is what life is about!
Thinking about this year and all the amazing things I want to accomplish, makes me excited for the year ahead. I do not want to just work and watch the years go by. Our weeks are made of days, our years are made of the weeks. You need to work towards that life you want every day or life will pass you by either way.
Life is a game, there are no rules. You can have fun, and you can do whatever you want to do! Whatever you truly want to do.
To make an goal, I reflect on what is it that I really want. Not what I am told to want by society, my friends, my parents. What is it that makes my soul happy? Give me more of that please!
