15 Small Ways to Save Money That Add Up: Your Ticket to Affordable Travel

January 26, 2025

Okay, let’s talk about travel costs. Flights, accommodation, food, adventures… it adds up. But here’s the thing—travel doesn’t have to be a luxury reserved for the wealthy. With some small, intentional changes, you can save more than you think and make your travel dreams a reality.

Let’s dive into some simple ways to save money, both while you’re at home and on your trips.

1. Understand and Spend to Your Values

If you show me your bank statement, I will tell you your values. Absolutely nothing wrong with spending money on things if that’s what you value. But understand what your values are first, so you are not mindlessly spending.

If you’re spending $5 on coffee five days a week, that’s $25 a week—or $1,300 a year. That’s a flight to Bali right there! But if this is something you really value each morning and makes you happy, maybe there is a better way to cut down the $5 per day.

2. Hunt for Flight Deals

Flights are often the biggest expense (especially from Aus!), but scoring a deal can make travel much more affordable. Use tools like Google Flights, Skyscanner, or Hopper to track prices. Be flexible with dates and destinations—sometimes a slight shift in your plans can save you hundreds.

Tip! – Keep your eye out for sales, follow airlines on socials to see when they have deals.

3. Another Reason to Stay in Hostels

Hostels aren’t just for backpackers in their early 20s. They’re a fantastic way to save money and meet other travelers. Plus, many hostels offer free breakfast, kitchen facilities, and even free walking tours.

Tip! – If you do not want to be in a dorm, a private room at a hostel can still be cheaper than a hotel. As well as still being social.

4. Cook Your Own Meals

Eating out for every meal can burn a hole in your wallet fast. If your accommodation has a kitchen, get to a local grocery store and cook your own meals. Even making breakfast and packing lunches can save a significant chunk of cash.

Tip! – Chose 1 meal per day to spend your cash on.

5. Walk, Don’t Uber

Walking is free, good for your health, and one of the best ways to truly explore a destination. If walking isn’t an option, public transportation is usually much cheaper than rideshares or taxis.

6. Skip Souvenirs (Or Go Small)

Do you really need another fridge magnet or T-shirt you’ll never wear? Instead, focus on experiences and take tons of photos. If you must buy a souvenir, go for something small, meaningful, and locally made.

7. Get Cashback

If you’re not using a cashback app, you’re leaving money on the table. These cards can help you earn cash on everyday purchases, which you can put toward flights, hotels, or activities.

Tip! – I personally use ShopBack and LOVE IT! I have it has a Chrome extension, so anytime I am on a website that offers cash back I am notified.

8. Travel Off-Season

Peak travel seasons mean higher prices for everything. Traveling in the shoulder or off-season can save you money on flights, accommodation, and activities. Bonus: fewer crowds make for a more relaxed trip.

Tip! – I always check for any school holidays or events as well. Especially if traveling in popular destinations for kids, eg Gold Coast or theme parks.

9. Embrace Free Activities

Many destinations offer free or low-cost activities if you know where to look. Think hiking trails, free museums, city parks, and cultural festivals. Do a little research beforehand to find budget-friendly ways to explore.

10. Sell What You Don’t Use

Have clothes, gadgets, or gear collecting dust? Sell them online or at a local market. Not only will you declutter your life, but you’ll also add to your travel fund. Win-win!

11. Cut Subscriptions You Don’t Use

Are you really watching all five streaming services you’re subscribed to? Cancel the ones you don’t use often, and put that money toward your travel budget.

12. Stay Longer in One Place

Slow travel is not only more affordable (fewer transport costs) but also more immersive. Booking longer stays often gets you discounts, and you’ll have time to find hidden gems that don’t cost a fortune.

13. Use a Bank Without Fees or High Conversion Rates

It’s 2024, why pay for bank fees if you don’t have to? Also why not get the best conversion rate for when you are traveling? I personally use and recommend Up Bank! You can use your regular card overseas and the conversion rate is better than other places that advertise as “low conversation travel cards”.

14. Be Flexible with Your Plans

Last-minute plans often lead to higher costs. If you’re flexible, you can wait for deals on flights, accommodation, and activities. Plus, being open to different destinations can lead to some unexpected and affordable adventures.

15. Pack Snacks

Whether you’re running errands at home or sightseeing abroad, impulse snack purchases add up fast. Granola bars, trail mix, or even a sandwich in your bag can save you from overpriced airport food or convenience store traps.

Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive, and your budget shouldn’t hold you back from seeing the world. By making small, intentional changes in your spending habits, you can save enough to turn your dream trip into reality. Remember, every little bit counts—and before you know it, you’ll be booking that flight.
